Behind The Design: The Plush Bathmat
Have you heard? We've just launched The Plush Bathmat, and it's just as luxurious as it sounds – elevating your evening bath to new levels of relaxation. Fans of The Plush Towel and Robes, trust us, you need this in your life.
To tell us a bit more about this newest launch, Creative Director and Founder, Jo, and our Product Lead, Emma, chat about all the details behind the design.
Tell us why you wanted to extend The Bathroom Collection? Why was The Plush Bathmat next?
Jo: At Bedfolk, we’re obsessed with winding down well. The bed was the perfect place to start back in 2018, but our mission has extended beyond the bedroom, and since launching our Bathroom Collection in late 2021, it’s become an important part of our brand. And even more importantly, a popular category with our community of comfort addicts.
In keeping with our design ethos, The Bathroom Collection offers a curated selection of only the best. Adding a new product is always a lengthy process, as we want to ensure everything we do is timeless and of the highest quality. Each product needs to be able to stand alone, as we don’t launch multiples of the same product (unless there is a key difference or benefit to our customers). So, we’ve been working away on newness for the bathroom for quite some time.
A Bathmat was always part of the plan, and we’ve worked really hard to create one that feels special to use and makes that moment of stepping in/out of the bath or shower the squishiest and comfiest it can be! I liked the idea of creating a ‘welcome mat’ for the bath, and this really does feel like that. It seems like a simple product, but you’d be surprised how much work goes into designing and developing even the simplest things at Bedfolk.
What makes The Plush Bathmat unique?
Jo: There are multiple reasons why this product is unique and special!
Firstly, the weight (and hence the plushness/squishiness on the feet). We’ve been very generous with this, as it makes all the difference for a bathmat. You want that plumpness underfoot when you climb out of the bath, and this absolutely delivers on that front.
Secondly, and linked, is how soft it is. We’ve used 100% long-staple Turkish cotton, finished in a special way that makes it ultra-soft. It really is a treat for your feet. We had no doubt the quality would be exceptional, as we continue to work with our partners in Turkey who are absolute experts in towelling (and who we created our bestselling Plush Towel, Plush Robe and Dream Cotton Robe with).
Thirdly – and I’ll stop myself with three – is the design. It’s simple but timeless, with a chunky rib which will work in so many different bathrooms. We’re really thrilled with how these have turned out; I never knew I could get this excited about bathmats!
What did the design process involve?
Emma: To create the effortless simplicity of the bathmat, we worked closely with our suppliers on the smallest of details. Selecting an Ultrasoft, long-staple cotton for the ultimate softness, and a thick, plush weight for that spa-like feeling. We designed the bathmat with a gentle rib texture, to give a sense of movement and flow, while maintaining a level of minimalism to suit any décor and interior style.
Tell us about the launch colour palette and which one you will choose for your bathroom…
Jo: The colour palette was chosen to match The Plush Towel – we’re launching in Snow, Rose and Slate. They feel like calming bathroom colours and have worked really well in towelling so far (both The Plush Towel and The Plush Robe), so it made sense to launch with the same palette.
I actually have all three in my house – with a toddler who loves playing in mud they often need washing, so I like to switch it up! We also test the products rigorously prior to ordering them, so we live with them for many, many months before they are officially launched. My personal favourite is always Rose. I love how this translated to towelling back in 2021, so I tend to go all rose everything when it comes to the bathroom.
