The Homing Call: The One About Gardening

We've got a new Saturday morning ritual for you. Wake up (at whatever time), roll over and read The Homing Call.

It's an exploration of all the things that call our bedfolk home - from novels and DIY to romcoms and wine. Sure, we've spent many hours at home this year, which means we've had even more time to reflect on our creature comforts.

Each week we'll explore a new home pastime worth staying in for - with interviews, lie-in lists and more. Think of it as another excuse to stay in bed ten minutes longer, not that you need one.

The Homing Call: The One About Gardening

These days we’re more likely to be scrolling than digging, but with more time spent at home and more reasons to disconnect from our screens, we’re thinking that gardening could be the way forward.

We might not all be blessed with vast backyards and tonnes of space, but it doesn’t mean we can’t get our green fingers in the game.

This weekend’s edition looks at the simple joy of gardening, and tips on how to get started.

Words To Wake Up To

On Saturday afternoons when all the things are done in the house and there’s no real work to be done, I play Bach and Chopin and turn it up real loudly and get a good bottle of chardonnay and sit out on my deck and look out at the garden. – Maya Angelou

The Comfort Zone

In case you don’t follow Oprah on Instagram, allow us to share her next level obsession with gardening – which we’re totally here for.

Most recently she shared a cabbage the size of a small horse (“not one chemical used”, she boasts) from her garden in Hawaii. Usually this would make us pretty jealous, but seeing Oprah’s all-encompassing love for gardening makes us more green-fingered than green-eyed.

Sure, she may have acres of land on Maui but there are more than a few tips on her website to help beginners start toiling the earth – because why not when we’re spending so much time at home?

Pillowtalk

Tor Harrison from Toro Studio, an online shop selling houseplants & handmade ceramics, has made pottering with plants a full time profession (dream job right there) and a winding down ritual.

“Gardening is a balm for mind, body and soul… There are soothing repetitive jobs that I find meditative and in general it really allows me to take time for myself, getting fresh air and dirt under my fingernails, observing all the small changes that are taking place around me.”

Felicity Quilt

Before Instagram, before therapy, before we looked for answers in astrology apps, there was Felicity Quilt - Bedfolk's resident agony aunt. She's a pedant for clean rooms, made beds and no nonsense between the sheets. Each week she'll be the F.Q. to your FAQs...

Dear FQ,

Can you suggest a gardening pastime that can be done from the comfort of my own bed?

Dear Lazy Gardener,

Absolutely. Make a Pinterest board of all the gardens you love, buy what you need to create this oasis, then direct your partner/flatmate from bed, shouting directions through the window. It’s called project management.
