Autumn Styling Tips

As we transition into colder (and cosier) months, now is the perfect time to start piling on the layers and transitioning into heavier textures and moodier colour palettes. We spoke to Freelance Stylist and Art Director, Hattie Lowers, who shares her tips on how to style your wind down space this season.

What colour palettes do you tend to go for in the autumn? Which ones work well together?

Autumn lends itself to a darker, moodier palette to evoke warmth. To break up the darker tones, I tend to stick to a base of neutrals.

I love introducing pops of greens and find that Moss is a perfect shade to introduce into my space at this time of year to bring in that cosier feel. The Dream Cotton Throw works particularly well, as the reversible sides of Moss and Clay really complement each other, while adding some extra texture and warmth.

What does the perfect autumn layering situation look like for you?

For the cosiest bed setup, I love stacks of cushions. Plump pillows as a base with cushions in different sizes and textures to layer against each other.

If I’m having an extra cosy movie night, I’ll move some larger cushions onto the sofa with a super luxurious blanket or throw. I opt for the Dream Cotton Square Pillowcases – the cotton gauze adds a super soft texture that looks just how it feels: like sinking into a cloud.

In an older home, multipurpose transitional pieces are key for me as it gets so chilly and nesting becomes more important!

What materials/ textures convey that autumn feeling?

I’m always a big fan of natural textures but especially love bringing in heavier knitted and woven fabrics, wooly finishes and earthenware accessories at this time of year. I’ll traditionally combine these with earthy foliage, which helps to bring the outside in - it’s a great way to celebrate the season and compliment the green tones in my space.

How do you achieve that cosy lighting feel?

Dimmable lighting and lots of lamps are a must. I made the change to smart lightbulbs years ago and it's been the best decision to set a cosy tone in my home. I have different light schemes for different spaces, and what’s more – they’ll come on with a timer as soon as it gets dark outside, which helps me to switch into a state of mind for winding down.

Are there any extra details that help to elevate a cosy space?

I love creating some extra ambience with candles, especially in autumn and winter. I'll be lighting my new Comfort Candle – the flickering light and its soft creamy fragrance will provide the perfect finishing touches to a cosy autumn set-up.

The smell of woodsmoke and the sweet sound of Ella Fitzgerald are also a big part of my relaxation routine and the overall ambience of my home – hopefully with some perfect rainy weather outside for ultimate Autumn magic!
