Behind The Design: The Housecoat

Introducing our new icon: The Housecoat. Completely unique to Bedfolk, it’s made from the softest jersey we could find and is guaranteed to be the cosiest thing you’ll ever wear. Soft and light, it’s the crème de la crème and the dictionary definition of cosy luxury.

As the autumn nights draw in, we see you lounging in the kitchen with a glass of wine or sinking into the sofa, smooth jazz playing, a cosy fire crackling, and wrapped up in the luxuriously quilted Housecoat. Filled with recycled and unbelievably squishy wadding, and encased with the softest jersey ever.

No stitch or seam has been left unturned when designing The Housecoat; it’s fully lined and features drop shoulders and tie belt detail at the waist. Designed to be slightly oversized and luxuriously long for cosy nights in. We are obsessed with the quilted deliciousness…

The Houscoat

To tell you a bit more about this new icon, Creative Director and Founder, Jo, and our Product Lead, Emma, chat about all the details behind the design.

What makes The Housecoat unique?

Jo: The attention to detail. It’s fully lined, which feels so luxurious, and everything from the size of the collar and the drop of the shoulder to the hand feel of the jersey was painstakingly considered. Taking the time to thoughtfully consider all these details means it really is a pleasure to wear, so comfortable and cosy and cosy, and will be an item that can be enjoyed for years and years.

The Housecoat

Why did you want to make it?

Jo: At Bedfolk, we love a robe. They’re the perfect signifier of winding down, those cosy comfortable moments at home. We already have a towelling robe (The Plush Robe), and a lighter-weight cotton robe (The Dream Cotton Robe), so felt like we had space for something super-cosy. The Housecoat is made of jersey which gives it a really soft and cosy feel, and then it also has internal wadding, which basically makes it like wearing a (stylish) duvet. We’re all obsessed at Bedfolk HQ!

The Housecoat

What did the design process involve?

Emma: Before embarking on each detail of the housecoat, we started with a feeling. We wanted The Housecoat to embody those late-morning lie-ins, super cosy winter evenings and the comfort of bed. This helped guide our decision of making the housecoat nicely oversized, generously long in length (it's longer than our Plush and Dream Cotton Robe) and creating a pattern that evoked a cocoon-like wrap around. We were mindful of creating sleeves long enough to tuck your fingers into as well as being easily rolled back, a full collar to cover any chills, while also being fully practical with pockets! When it came to colour, we knew it had to be our most loved neutral, Clay. Such a grounding and universal colour, great for our unisex housecoat!

What do you love most about The Housecoat?

Jo: Touch is big for us when developing any product, and we’re always seeking out the ultimate in softness. This is our first jersey product, and I absolutely love how it feels against the skin (we tried a lot of different samples to get it just right - super, super soft). It truly is a pleasure to wear, and I’m already dreaming of cosy autumn/winter evenings wrapped up in it on the sofa!
